Telefilm Canada has announced six projects selected for funding through its Indigenous streams.

Four films from the English market and two from the French have been selected in the Theatrical Documentary Program and the Production Program, totaling an investment of nearly $3 million, according to a news release.

Selected in the English market is the drama Aberdeen (formerly Treaty Days), a coproduction from Manitoba. The feature from Back to Space Productions and Farpoint Films is directed by Eva Thomas and Ryan Wilson, who is also the screenwriter.

Also earmarked is the drama Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) from Nunavut. From Kingulliit Productions, it is directed by Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk, who is also the screenwriter alongside Samuel Cohn-Cousineau and Carol Kunnuk.

Also included from the English market are the animation Qaqsoss naka Wahuntsis (Moxy Fox Studio) from New Brunswick by director and screenwriter Tara Audibert, and the documentary Rite of Passage (Red Giant Productions) from Prince Edward Island by director and screenwriter Eliza Knockwood.

From the French market are two Quebec-based films: the action-adventure Capitaine (Kassiwi Média) from director William Mazzoleni Valin, who is also screenwriter alongside Sylvain Raymond; and the documentary Ces liens que nous ne voyons pas (Terre Innue) by Kim O’Bomsawin, who is also screenwriter alongside Mathieu Fournier.

Telefilm commits an annual $4 million for Indigenous creators in Canada. The remaining $1 million is reserved for projects submitted through the Talent to Watch and Development programs.

The projects are assessed by an advisory committee of external and internal representatives which then makes recommendations to Telefilm. More production funding decisions are to be announced in the coming weeks.
