Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez is set to give a keynote speech at next month’s Banff World Media Festival (BANFF).
Rodriguez will address BANFF attendees on the morning of June 12 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, where the festival’s 44th edition runs June 11 to 14.
His appearance comes as the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Canadian Media Producers Association and various industry stakeholders look ahead to what’s next for the modernization of the Broadcasting Act.
Canadian Heritage must also issue a policy direction to the CRTC on how to interpret and implement certain sections of the legislation, after the passage of Bill C-11 (a.k.a. the Online Streaming Act) last month.
Meanwhile, the CRTC has announced a three-phase regulatory plan for public consultations around the new Broadcasting Act. A dozen groups have requested an extension in the deadline for the implementation proceedings for the consultations.
CRTC chairperson and CEO Vicky Eatrides will also deliver a keynote session at BANFF on June 12.
“With the recent historic passing of the Online Streaming Act into law, we are especially honoured to host Minister Rodriguez at the festival this year to deliver a much anticipated address to our industry,” said Jenn Kuzmyk, executive director, Banff World Media Festival, and VP and publisher of Playback, in a statement.
“We look forward to working with the Canadian government and all media and culture sector stakeholders to advance priorities that strengthen Canada’s creative industries.”
