Global sets Family Law, Departure for summer schedule

They join newly acquired U.S. musical game show Superfan, which features Canadian singer Shania Twain.

Global is front-loading its primetime summer lineup with Cancon, slotting in new seasons of Canadian original dramas Family Law (SEVEN24 Films, Lark Productions) and Departure (Shaftesbury) alongside newly acquired U.S. musical game show Superfan.

The Corus Entertainment network has added fresh instalments of the two scripted series to its Global and StackTV schedule on Monday nights nearly two years after renewing them at its upfront in 2021.

Season two of legal drama Family Law (starting May 22) comes more than a year and a half after its season one debut in September 2021. A third season was greenlit and went into production a year ago.

Family Law was acquired by the CW in the U.S. in April 2022. Principal Canadian cast members Jewel Staite, Victor Garber, Zach Smadu, Genelle Williams and Lauren Holly all return for the new season, according to a news release.

The third instalment of thriller Departure (beginning Aug. 7) sees Canadian star Eric McCormack joining the ensemble cast that also includes Archie Panjabi. This six-part season will centre on the investigation of the sinking of a sea ferry destined for Newfoundland.

The lineup also includes 6 x 60-minute CBS reality competition series Superfan (beginning June 9), in which Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain joins fellow music performers Kelsea Ballerini, Gloria Estefan, Little Big Town, LL Cool J and Pitbull in crowning their biggest fan.

“Global is the home of ‘Hollywood North’ with so many Canadian and international icons starring in our summer lineup this year,” said Troy Reeb, EVP, broadcast networks, Corus Entertainment, in a statement.

Corus is set to hold its next upfront on June 7. It will announce more summer lineup announcements for Global “soon, including the premiere date for the much-anticipated new Global original Robyn Hood from prolific Canadian music video director and renowned TV director and filmmaker Director X. Plus another exciting new season of Big Brother!” said the release.
