Crave acquires trio of local versions of The Traitors

The Bell Media streamer has picked up the U.S., U.K., and Australian adaptations of the reality competition series, which originated in the Netherlands.

Crave has acquired Canadian rights to the U.S., U.K., and Australian adaptations of the reality series The Traitors.

The deal sees the Bell Media-owned streaming service acquire the finished tapes for all three versions via U.K. distributor All3Media International, which holds tape and format rights, according to a press release.

The original format came from IDTV in the Netherlands, and was developed with Luxembourg-based RTL Group’s creative unit.

The format for The Traitors is described as an “intense psychological adventure,” where contestants compete for cash, knowing that a number among them are “traitors,” while the rest are called “the faithful.” Players are voted out each week to weed out potential traitors, and if any traitor remains by the end of the game, they win the final cash prize.

Both the U.S. and U.K. series were produced by London, England prodco Studio Lambert. The U.S. version was hosted by Scottish actor Alan Cumming (pictured) and premiered on Peacock in January, while the U.K. format aired on BBC One in November 2022, hosted by TV personality Claudia Winkleman.

The Australian series was produced by Endemol Shine for Network 10, and premiered in October 2022. Season one was hosted by Australian actor Rodger Corser.

All3Media International has sold the format to 20 different regions to date, with the latest format deals coming from Greece, Hungary, Israel and Sweden. The deals were announced Monday (April 17) at the start of global content market MIPTV, which runs in Cannes, France until Wednesday (April 19).
