Prime Video has greenlit two new seasons of LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier?, the Quebec version of its original hit unscripted format, and brought Toronto-raised Jeremy Podeswa on board its limited series Blade Runner 2099 as a director and executive producer.
The francophone competition LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier?, which premiered in early January, will return to filming in Montreal for seasons two and three and see comedian Patrick Huard (pictured left; Bon Cop Bad Cop, Starbuck) return as host. Montreal-based Attraction will once again produce, according to a news release.
The Canadian Amazon original series sees a cast of French-speaking comedic actors and stand-ups holed up in a room for six hours as they compete to make each other laugh first. It will screen exclusively the Amazon streamer in 240 countries and territories worldwide.
LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier? is an adaptation of Documental, the Japanese Amazon original series created by and starring Hitoshi Matsumoto and owned by Yoshimoto Kogyo. The format also includes an English-language version in Canada, the Insight Productions-produced LOL: Last One Laughing Canada, which premiered last year.
Magda Grace, head of Prime Video, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement that LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier? has “become a smash-hit for Prime Video in Quebec.”
Meanwhile, Podeswa (pictured right) will direct the pilot of Prime Video’s U.S.-produced Blade Runner 2099 and serve as a producing director as well as an executive producer, according to a Prime Video statement.
The live-action series is from U.S.-based Scott Free Productions and Alcon Entertainment, which has film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the 1982 Blade Runner film. Filmmaker Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer and Silka Luisa serves as showrunner as well as an executive producer.
Michael Green, the screenwriter behind the Denis Villeneuve-directed film Blade Runner 2049, will serve as a non-writing executive producer, along with Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon’s head of television Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Tom Spezialy has joined the writers room and will also serve as an executive producer.
Blade Runner 2099 will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The Emmy-nominated Podeswa’s other upcoming work includes Netflix’s sci-fi adaptation of Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem trilogy and Apple’s drama series The New Look. He is represented by Artists First, CAA and Peikoff Mahan.
