Katak, the Brave Beluga has grossed nearly $1.2 million since its theatrical release on Feb. 24.

Domestic feature Katak, the Brave Beluga has crossed the $1 million mark at the box office in Canada.

The 3D-animated film is directed by Christine Dallaire-Dupont and Nicola Lemay, and written by Andrée Lambert. It is produced by Nancy Florence Savard of Quebec City’s 10th Ave Productions. Maison 4:3 handles distribution in Canada.

Katak, the Brave Beluga premiered in theatres across Quebec and Canada on Feb. 24, and passed the $1 million gross mark following its second weekend in theatres, according to a press release. It will continue to appear on more than 120 screens in Canada on Friday (March 10).

The film has grossed a cumulative box office of $1,195,560 as of Wednesday (March 8), with more than $1.02 million coming from Quebec, according to Maison 4:3.

Katak, the Brave Beluga follows a late bloomer beluga whale who goes on a journey along the St. Lawrence River to meet his grandfather in the Arctic.

“It’s fantastic to see the public coming out to welcome new characters, to discover original stories, and to step into our world,” said Savard in a statement.

Katak, the Brave Beluga was also a co-winner of the audience award at the Montreal International Children’s Film Festival, which ended on March 6. The film was tied with live-action comedy film Coco Ferme, directed by Sebastien Gagne.
