Toronto-based content producer Makers is embarking on a multi-country shoot for a feature-length documentary on blind Malian musical duo and married couple Amadou & Mariam.
Principal photography has started on The Blind Couple From Mali and will continue through the early part of this year in Paris, Barcelona, London, and Bamako, Mali, according to a news release. Canadian filmmaker Ryan Marley (Sitting Tall: The Patrick Anderson Story, Candidato 34) is the director of the doc, while Sonia Godding Togobo is the writer.
The independent film is produced by Makers and was developed in association with documentary Channel and Mediawan. The production team includes Makers executive producer Katie Lafferty (Employable Me) and producer Michelle Asgarali (Breaking Character).
Cameras will capture Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia as they as they prepare “for the concert of a lifetime in hopes that it will unite their war-torn country,” said the release. They, along with artists and experts, will also share their untold story with never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews.
Marley said in a statement that the film will have a “verité experience” as it features the couple on tour and at their homes in Paris and Mali.
Amadou & Mariam have been combining West African influences with rhythm and blues since the 1980s, earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album for Welcome To Mali (2008).
They’re also known for co-writing the official anthem Celebrate The Day for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and for performing at the 2010 and 2014 opening ceremonies of the FIFA World Cup as well as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in honour of former U.S. President Barack Obama.
The Blind Couple From Mali is slated for release in 2023 on documentary Channel. The film’s budget was not disclosed.
