Toronto- and New York–based prodco Cineflix Productions and executive producers Valerie LoCascio, Anne Kenny, and Amrita Gandhi are developing The Descendants, a new four-part premium documentary anthology that examines the descendants of some of history’s most iconic figures.
Boasting exclusive access, the series will embark on a journey with people for whom Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr. are part of the family. It will give viewers a look at some of modern history’s most inspirational people via the four families’ private collections of archival materials and untold stories of their famous forebears.
Executive producer Gandhi, an author and TV host and the great-granddaughter of the Indian leader, will personally represent the modern-day Ghandi family.
Tracy Roosevelt will examine how the International Declaration of Human Rights drafted by her great-grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt influenced her own path in life as an attorney specializing in conflict resolution.
The Churchill family will retrace the career of the former two-time British prime minister and wartime leader, while Isaac Newton Farris Jr., senior fellow of the MLK Center for Nonviolent Social Change and nephew of Martin Luther King Jr., will interview immediate King family members and discuss the Center’s current activities.
“It is our goal to tell timely stories, and The Descendants hits every note,” said J.C. Mills, president and head of content at Cineflix Productions, who serves as an executive producer on the project along with LoCascio, Kenny and Gandhi. “We live in a world facing unprecedented challenges with a lack of global leadership. Gandhi, Roosevelt, Churchill, and King were legends who left an indelible impression, and we hope our docuseries will remind audiences of their legacies and inspire viewers to stand up for what they believe in.”
