The Canada Media Fund has invested $4 million across 21 projects in its Diverse Languages Program.
The program provides production funding to projects not in English, French or in Indigenous languages, with funding decisions made by a jury. The recipients include Toronto’s Longhope Media for season two of the OMNI Television Tagalog sketch comedy series Abroad ($200,000).
A total of $1.4 million has been allocated to a production company affiliated with TLN, according to CMF, with each receiving $200,000. The projects include Spanish-language drama Nuestra senora sin cabeza, and six Spanish, Italian and Portuguese documentaries, including Rebeldes para siempre, Cosmica: Alla ricerca dell’aldilà, and Diogo Snow: O fazer de um artista urbano.
Markham, Ont.-based ECG Productions has received more than $1.17 million across seven projects, including season two of the Russian children’s series Mama Canada ($1,200). It also picked up support for five documentaries in Tagalog, Russian and Vietnamese, including Guro ($199,626), Rebel With Guitar ($197,997), Boat People: A 50-Year Journey ($196,742), and a Hebrew variety and performing arts project.
ICI Télévision has received $797,348 across four documentaries in Ukrainan, Creole, Dari and Japanese, titled Montréal, Ukraine ($199,792), De Zil ($199,459), Where is My Name? ($198,667), and Bad Girl ($199,430), respectively.
Rounding out the recipients are Brilliant Media’s Mandarin drama Cucumber A-Yi ($199,979) and the Ukrainian doc Ukrainian Mothers ($196,842).
