WildBrain’s Degrassi revival not moving forward at HBO Max

The Halifax-based company told investors on Friday that "production on the series remains paused" and contract discussions with WarnerMedia are ongoing.

WildBrain has confirmed its planned Degrassi series will not head to HBO Max, following a pause in its production plans.

The Halifax-based company issued a statement to investors on Friday (Nov. 4) that the 10 x 60-minute series “will not be debuting on… HBO Max,” adding that “production on the series remains paused and discussions concerning the contract with WarnerMedia are ongoing.”

Degrassi was initially greenlit at the beginning of this year, and was slated to go into production in Toronto during the summer. Canadian writers Lara Azzopardi (Backstage) and Julia Cohen (Riverdale) were attached as co-showrunners and executive producers.

WildBrain confirmed to investors in September that production was paused and that the company was “engaged in constructive discussions with HBO Max.”

At the time the series was announced, HBO Max had acquired all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, which WildBrain has confirmed remains on the U.S. platform.

The company also stated that its fiscal 2023 guidance remains unchanged, projecting revenue of between $525 million and $575 million. WildBrain reported more than $507 million in revenue in fiscal 2022.

“WildBrain greatly appreciates the devotion and patience of Degrassi fans. Degrassi remains enormously popular around the world and, as owners of the franchise, WildBrain is committed to the future of Degrassi,” read the statement.
