Queen Bees screenwriter gets Humanitas Prize nomination buzz

Toronto-raised Donald Martin is nominated in a field that also includes scribes from Canadian-produced Karma's World and Snoopy Presents: To Mom (and Dad), with Love.

Queen Bees Canadian screenwriter Donald Martin has been nominated for the 2022 Humanitas Prizes, which have also recognized scribes from Karma’s World by Toronto-based 9 Story Media Group and Snoopy Presents: To Mom (and Dad), with Love from Halifax-headquartered WildBrain.

Los Angeles-based Martin (pictured) is nominated in the category of Comedy Feature Film for penning the 2021 U.S. romcom Queen Bees, directed by Michael Lembeck and starring Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, Ann-Margret, and Christopher Lloyd. A veteran writer with dozens of credits, Martin hails from Toronto and moved to L.A. in the mid-’90s but has continued to work in both Canada and the U.S.

A total of 45 writers are in the running across nine juried categories for the U.S.-based Humanitas Prizes, which honour film and television writers “whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way.”

Other nominees include U.S. writers Kellie R. Griffin and Halcyon Person of 9 Story’s 3D animated children’s comedy Karma’s World. They’re named in the Children’s Teleplay category for the episode “Hair Comes Trouble.”

That category also includes Alex Galatis for Apple TV+ Peanuts animated special Snoopy Presents: To Mom (and Dad), with Love from Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates and WildBrain Studios.

Prize winners will be announced live at an in-person awards luncheon in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sept. 9.
