Boat Rocker snags rights to ‘ornery pussycat’ story Bad Kitty

The Toronto-based media company plans to develop an animated television series based on the children's book series by Nick Bruel.

Boat Rocker is set to develop an animated television series based on The New York Times bestselling children’s book series Bad Kitty from U.S. author Nick Bruel.

The Toronto-based media company says it has secured the rights to the series, which debuted in 2005 and has been published in 23 languages in dozens of territories.

The book series has sold more than 20 million copies and is represented by Jennie Dunham at Dunham Literary in New York and Brendan Deneen.

The story of a mischievous housecat is part of Boat Rocker’s growing slate of original kids and family content, said a statement from Jon Rutherford, president of Boat Rocker Studios, kids and family.

Bruel said Boat Rocker “has the right kind of creative energy and entertainment bonafides perfect for my ornery pussycat.”

Boat Rocker’s other kids and family series include Dino Ranch for Disney, the upcoming Daniel Spellbound for Netflix, The Next Step for CBBC/iPlayer, YTV, and HBO Max, and Amber Brown for Apple TV+. The company also recently announced it is developing Stuffed, based on the Erik McCurdy webcomic and book series, into an animated series.
