CBC is among a raft of broadcasters that have acquired BBC Studios’ six-part documentary A Life in Ten Pictures, which explores the lives of six famous figures in pop culture through photographs. The docuseries is currently available on streaming service CBC Gem and the pubcaster’s documentary channel.
The six famous faces featured in the documentary are Queen singer Freddie Mercury, actor Elizabeth Taylor, rapper Tupac Shakur, boxing champion Muhammad Ali and musicians John Lennon and Amy Winehouse. The docuseries has also been sold to territories such as Brazil (Globo), Spain (Movistar Plus+), Australia (ABC), New Zealand (Sky TV), Germany (Sky Deutschland), Italy (Sky Italia), Sub–Saharan Africa (MNET and ShowMax) and Denmark (DR).
BBC Studios has also sold the Winehouse-focused documentary Reclaiming Amy to unscripted SVOD BBC Select in the U.S. and Canada, which launched in the domestic market in winter 2021.
Starline Group
Equipment and vehicle supplier Starline Group has expanded its business with the acquisition of Toronto’s Mobile Generators. The deal will see Starline Group, which services film and TV productions in the Greater Toronto Area, open a mobile generator division. Mobile Generators managing partner Paul Spaven will join Starline as general manager of the new division.
Starline Group was formed in 2019 and has acquired a number of equipment rental services since, including Screenlinx Limited, Harrington Rentals, United Star Suites and It’s a Wrap Rentals.
Sinking Ship Entertainment
Toronto’s Sinking Ship has inked a handful of new licensing deals for its hybrid live-action and animated series Dino Dana. New products include the brand’s first audio book (Recorded Books), an activity book (Mango Publishing) and new dinosaur figures with augmented reality features (Safari), all set to hit international shelves later this year.
The 52 x 22-minute series premiered in 2017 and revolves around a 10-year-old girl who can see and interact with dinosaurs. Aimed at three- to seven-year-olds, Dino Dana is produced in association with TVOKids and Prime Video. It has aired on international broadcasters such as Nat Geo Kids LatAm, Canal Once (Mexico) and Senal Colombia.
Looking Glass Labs
Vancouver-based NFT studio House of Kibaa has struck a collaborative agreement with New York-based Polygon’s gaming and metaverse vision, Polygon Studios, to provide technical, business and promotional support across projects. The agreement will see Polygon Studios provide support in the creation of House of Kibaa’s GenZeroes NFT collection and its Project Origin metaverse. It will also see Polygon Studios promote projects across social media platforms and identify potential collaborations with its other partners. House of Kibaa is a subsidary of Vancouver’s Looking Glass Labs.
