Quebec director Danic Champoux has died at the age of 45.
The documentary filmmaker died on Friday (Feb. 18), announced by publicity firm pixellex on Saturday (Feb. 19). The cause of death was not disclosed.
Champoux directed a number of documentary projects with the National Film Board of Canada, including Self(less) Portrait, in which 50 individuals shared personal stories in a free-form documentary style, which premiered at Hot Docs in 2014.
Other NFB titles include the 2019 documentary Daughter of the Crater, co-written and co-directed with Nadine Beaudet, chemotherapy-focused documentary Sessions (2012) and short doc My Father (2000).
His most recent documentary was CHSLD, mon amour (2020), which depicted the reality of residential and long-time care facilities for elders before the pandemic hit.
He directed more than 15 documentaries throughout his career, according to the NFB, which paid tribute to him in a tweet, praising the mark Champoux has made on Quebec cinema. Telefilm also paid tribute to Champoux on Twitter and offered condolences to his family.
Champoux is survived by his wife Tina, his children Agathe, Léon, Barbara and Pénélope, his parents Ninon and Guy and his brother François.
