Canadian producers and filmmakers Denis Villeneuve, J. Miles Dale and Roger Frappier have earned Best Picture nominations for the 94th Academy Awards.
The Frappier-produced Netflix film The Power of the Dog (See-Saw Films, Max Films, Big Shell, Brightstar) earned 12 total nominations, including a second Best Director nod for Jane Campion; Villenueve’s Dune (Warner Bros., Legendary Entertainment, Villeneuve Films) earned 10 nods, with the Quebec director also picking up a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth; and Dale’s Toronto-shot Nightmare Alley (Searchlight Pictures) earned four nominations, with Dale up for Best Picture with director Guillermo Del Toro and star Bradley Cooper.
“We’re thrilled about our Oscar nominations today, and especially for the recognition of our long-time collaborators Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau for art direction, Dan Laustsen for cinematography, and Luis Sequeira for costumes. The beautiful palette they created with Guillermo is a big part of what gives the film its power,” said Toronto-based Dale in a statement to Playback Daily.
The National Film Board of Canada co-production Affairs of the Art has also picked up a nomination for Best Animated Short. The short is directed by British filmmaker Joanna Quinn, written by Les Mills and produced by Mills under the U.K. Beryl Productions banner alongside the NFB’s Michael Fukushima.
“We are absolutely thrilled and delighted to hear that our film has got a nomination—it’s the fulfillment of a dream that we’ve had since we first started making films. We are especially grateful to our Canadian co-producers at the NFB for their unstinting support, professionalism, and expertise throughout the whole production process—a million thanks to them and, of course, to all of our fantastic production crew in Wales,” said Quinn and Mills in a statement.
Canadian director Ben Proudfoot picked up a second consecutive nomination in the Best Documentary Short category for The Queen of Basketball, produced under his L.A. banner Breakwater Studios. The Halifax-raised filmmaker earned a nomination for the documentary short A Concerto is a Conversation in 2021. Toronto producer Geoff McLean earned a nomination in the same category for Netflix’s short doc Audible.
Among the Canadians picking up individual nominations are the aforementioned Nightmare Alley team: costume designer Sequeira, and Deverell and Vieau for production design on the film. Also nominated for best production design is Montreal’s Patrice Vermette alongside Zsuzsanna Sipos for Dune, and the film’s hair and makeup artist Donald Mowat alongside Love Larson and Eva von Bahr.
“Dune was truly a team effort. The collaboration between all the departments was inspiring and beautiful. Everybody pushing together in the same direction with only one goal: supporting Denis’ vision,” said Vermette in a statement to Playback Daily.
The 94th Academy Award winners will be announced on March 27 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
