Music Video Production Project announces latest grant recipients

Organizers have also announced a new mentorship initiative called MVP Labs for young filmmakers and artists.

R BC and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television have announced 11 grant recipient teams for the seventh round of the Music Video Production (MVP) Project.

The MVP Project supports emerging Canadian musicians and filmmakers for music video creation and production. Set to begin later this year is a new mentorship initiative called MVP Labs for young filmmakers and artists around the development of music video treatments, budgets and production plans.

The majority of the latest grant recipients hail from Toronto, including: the team of recording artist IDMAN and director-producer Dara Heng; recording artist Jesse Ryan with director-producer Chris Strikes; recording artist Ramona Vee and director-producer Serville Poblete; and recording artist TyriqueOrDie with director Luke Fenton and producers Hayden Currie and Shane Campbell.

Also from Toronto: director Jimmy Vi and producer Rey Mendoza, who are working with Calgary recording artist Ruben Young; and director Iris Kim and producer Jeff So, who are collaborating with Hamilton recording artist Jasmyn. Other Ontario participants include recording artist-producer Francesca Wexler of Oshawa, Ont., with director Sean Cartwright of Ottawa.

Several participants are from Quebec: Québec City recording artist Ghostly Kisses with director Fred Gervais and producer Catherine Boily of Montreal; and recording artist Ouri with director Derek Branscombe and producers Raphaëlle Savoie, Catherine Marsland and Karine Pronovost aka Le Répertoire, all of Montreal.

Halifax is represented in recording artist Kim Harris with directors Meaghan & Marie Wright, and producer Emily Flynn. Hailing from Vancouver is the team of recording artist Amanda Sum, director Mayumi Yoshida and producer Sebastien Galina.

MVP Project began in 2018 as a joint initiative between RBCxMusic and the Prism Prize. It’s awarded 75 grants to emerging artists, including three 2021 Prism Prize shortlisters: Rich Aucoin’s Walls, Sean Leon’s 90 BPM and TOBi’s 24.

Round eight opens for submissions on April 1.
