Showrunner Morwyn Brebner and veteran exec Andrew Akman are teaming to launch a new TV-focused production company in partnership with Cineflix Media.
Husk Media, based in Toronto, will be creatively led by Brebner and focused on projects created by the Coroner showrunner, with Akman leading commercial affairs. In addition, the new entity will focus on projects created in partnership with emerging and established writers and showrunners.
With the launch of the company, Brebner will relinquish showrunning responsibilities on Coroner for the upcoming fourth season. Brebner is an executive producer on season four and will continue to be involved with the show in an ongoing way, according to a spokesperson for Cineflix.
Akman, who is currently the COO at Cineflix Media, will be transitioning out of the role in order to co-found Husk Media with Brebner. Akman has held the COO role since 2013. Prior to joining Cineflix, he served as VP, planning at Shaw Media and before that as SVP and chief administrative officer at Canwest Broadcasting.
As the company launches, Cineflix will provide start-up financing and operational support. Cineflix also has a first-look deal in place to distribute Husk Media projects internationally.
“Husk Media is an opportunity to give voice to rising stars whose stories need to be told on a global scale, while allowing me to continue to develop original content that connects to the here and now. We have the privilege of knowing some of the brightest talent in the business, and will build an inclusive hub for creatives to call home,” said Morwyn Brebner in a release.
Husk joins a roster of production companies and joint ventures launched in partnership with Cineflix, among them Montreal-based Connect3 Media and U.K.-based Buccaneer Media.
Aside from creating CBC hour-long drama Coroner, which has been a consistent international seller for Cineflix Rights over the past three years, Brebner also co-created the medical drama Saving Hope (CTV/ION) and police procedural Rookie Blue (ABC/Global).
