Former Bell Media exec Paul Sparkes named co-chair at Mogul

Sparkes and Gorav Seth will serve as co-chairs at decentralized film financing company, as it looks to enter a new phase of growth.

M ogul, the recently launched company focused on decentralized film financing and movie-based NFTs, is continuing to build out its leadership team.

The Toronto-based company has named veteran Canadian executive Paul Sparkes as its co-chair. The appointment comes a month after Mogul announced that Sparkes, who earlier in his career spent a decade as EVP of corporate affairs at CTVglobemedia (now Bell Media), was working with Mogul in an advisory capacity.

Joining Sparkes as co-chair is financier Gorav Seth, who spent over 12 years as an investment banker and venture capitalist at some of Canada’s leading independent investment dealers, raising over $4 billion for public and private companies alike, according to a release.

Mogul arrived on the scene earlier in the year, with the goal of shaking up the world of independent film financing by using blockchain technology to bring independent projects to market. Using its proprietary platform – which Mogul describes as a decentralized film-financing platform connecting creators, movie fans, financiers and other contributors – the company says its mission is to bring budget and profitability data onto the blockchain and, as a result, bring more transparency and accessibility to film production and financing.

Mogul has made a number of appointments to its leadership team in recent months, and added several advisors.

The company is led by founder and president Lisa Sun, while Tifanie Acost serves as head of business affairs and Cindy Cowan as head of business development. Its stable of advisors includes veteran producer and DCTV president and co-founder David Cormican and actor Lyriq Bent. Gagan Grewal, who previously served as CEO, is no longer with the company.

“Blockchain has proven to be a game-changer across many sectors,” said Sparkes in a statement. “I look forward to helping Mogul revolutionize the film industry as a next-generation film finance company.”

Since the platform went live, more than 42,000 users have signed up for the platform. Earlier in the year, Mogul showcased the first slate of projects that will be voted on by the platform’s users, who have a say in which films are greenlit and also in key aspects of the production.
