The writers from CBC’s Trickster and Schitt’s Creek emerged as winners in the 2021 WGC Screenwriting Awards, with Morwyn Brebner honoured with the Showrunner Award.
The Writers Guild of Canada’s annual awards ceremony took place virtually yesterday (April 26), hosted by The Beaverton‘s Emma Hunter.
Brebner, the writer behind hit procedurals such as Coroner, Rookie Blue and Saving Hope, is the latest Canadian screenwriter to take the Showrunner Award. It has previously been given to former WGC president Dennis Heaton, Emily Andras and Michael MacLennan.
Dan Levy picked up the writing prize for a comedy series for the Schitt’s Creek (Not a Real Company Productions) series finale, while Penny Gummerson won in the drama category for Trickster (Sienna Films, Streel Films). Levy thanked the WGC over social media for the guild’s “generosity in acknowledging several of our other writers throughout the years.” Schitt’s Creek writers Rupinder Gill and Amanda Walsh are among the series’ previous WGC Screenwriting Awards recipients.
Jonny Harris, Fraser Young, Graham Chittenden and Steve Dylan won the documentary prize for the CBC docuseries Still Standing (Frantic Films).

Johnson won for preschool series Dino Dana (Sinking Ship Entertainment). Utopia Falls (Sonar Entertainment) creator R.T. Thorne and showrunner Joseph Mallozzi earned a prize for the CBC Gem series in the tweens and teens category.
Actor and screenwriter Kate Hewlett was the recipient of the Sondra Kelly Award, which offers a $5,000 prize to mid-career women screenwriters toward research and development on an original project.
