How To Buy A Baby reborn in the global marketplace

Warner Bros. International Television Production has acquired the international format rights from Toronto-based Loco Motion Pictures following its successful launch in Sweden.

Canadian digital series How To Buy A Baby is being reborn in the international marketplace following a successful adaptation in Sweden and a newly inked format deal with Warner Bros. International Television Production (WBITVP).

WBITVP has acquired the global distribution rights (excluding Canada) to the format, which was produced initially by Lauren Corber’s LoCo Motion Pictures.

The announcement of the global deal comes on the heels of a successful launch in Sweden, where WBITVP’s Swedish offshoot adapted the format for Sweden’s Discovery+ platform. Season one (10 x 22 minutes) of the adaptation launched in February and a second season has already been ordered.

“It’s a show that is perfect for this time – genuine, honest and richly humorous. More and more we’re seeing audiences attracted to real and relatable stories and characters through a comedy lens – something that this format really delivers,” said Andrew Zein, SVP, creative format development and sales at WBITVP in a statement.

Season one of the CBC digital original, created by Wendy Litner, debuted in 2017, with the second season arriving in 2019. The comedy, which charts the struggles of a couple struggling to conceive, has garnered accolades both in Canada and internationally, winning best original digital series (fiction) at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards, best comedy at the 2019 Indie Series Awards and receiving an International Emmy nomination that same year, among other awards.

“We receive daily messages from our Canadian viewers about how meaningful the series is to them and we’re so excited for the opportunity to bring this story to audiences around the world,” said Corber, founder and president of LoCo Motion Pictures, in a statement.

WBITVP, established in 2009, has a network of production operations in 14 European countries, in addition to Australia and New Zealand. It also handles the format rights for series such as The Bachelor, First Dates, Mental Samurai, The Mentalist, Cold Case and Who Do You Think You Are?
