Boat Rocker Studios has partnered with Girls actor Allison Williams (pictured) on a U.S. remake of the CBC dramedy Being Erica.
Williams will star and executive produce the series, currently in development, with Sex and the City writers Elisa Zuritsky and Julie Rottenberg attached to write the pilot as co-showrunners and executive producers. Naima Ramos-Chapman (Random Acts of Flyness) is on board as director and executive producer. Jason Weinberg is also attached as executive producer.
The original series was produced by Boat Rocker Media (BRM)-owned prodco Temple Street and released on CBC in 2009, running for four seasons. It starred Erin Karpluk as a woman whose therapist sends her back in time to mend old mistakes in her life and was created by Jana Sinyor. Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier, who were recently named co-chairmen of Boat Rocker Studios, were executive producers of the original, alongside co-showrunners Sinyor and Aaron Martin.
The remake tweaks the show’s format as it follows two women – who are seemingly strangers – as they revisit their life mistakes and find out their lives are intertwined. This new series “represents the tremendous synergy of the broad grouping of brands under the newly announced Boat Rocker Studios,” according to Boat Rocker Studios vice-chair Katie O’Connell Marsh.
“Being Erica was one of the shows that put our company on the map,” said Forter and Scheenberg in a statement. “The opportunity to make it again under our newly branded Boat Rocker Studios and with such a talented creative team, is thrilling. We’re excited for a new generation of viewers to travel through time and fall in love with the show’s unique characters.”
The Toronto-based BRM realigned its Studios banner this week, rebranding Platform One to Boat Rocker Studios, scripted, naming O’Connell Marsh vice-chair. BRM president Michel Pratte has also added the title general manager.
