Blue Ant Media is increasing its presence in the Australian market, acquiring Australian Geographic magazine from multi-platform publisher Bauer Media.
The bi-monthly magazine has more than 40,000 subscribers and is known for photography, maps and stories covering various aspects of Australian life such as natural history, science, culture and travel. The magazine has a readership of over 540,000, according to Blue Ant, and is one of top 10 paid magazines in Australia. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The deal comes less than a year after Blue Ant acquired international media company The Racat Group, which has operations in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South East and Northern Asia. As part of that deal, completed in May 2017, Blue Ant acquired Sydney-based Northern Pictures, which licenses factual and documentary content to digital and traditional channels throughout Australia and internationally.
Australian Geographic will operate out of Northern Pictures’ office in Sydney.
“The purchase of Australian Geographic reinforces our footprint in the Australian market while providing an impactful vehicle for showcasing the work of our natural history documentaries and series being produced all over the world,” said Michael MacMillan, CEO, Blue Ant Media, in a statement.
Blue Ant also owns Cottage Life magazine, which is distributed in Canada and linked to the Cottage Life TV channel and consumer exhibitions.
