Turner, Warner Bros launch SVOD internationally

Filmstruck, a new movie-focused platform, will first launch in the U.K. ahead of multi-territory roll out over the next two years.

Turner International’s Digital Ventures & Innovation Group is partnering with Warner Bros. Digital Networks to launch a film-focused SVOD service internationally.

Turner’s FilmStruck, which first launched in the U.S. in October 2016, will now roll out in in the U.K. ahead of multi-territory expansion over the next two years. The companies did not specify which other territories would carry the new platform, which will be populated with movies from Warner Bros. and Turner’s catalogues. In the U.K., FilmStruck will launch in the coming weeks in partnership with London-based cinema brand Curzon under the name Filmstruck Curzon.

In a statement announcing the SVOD’s expansion, Turner said “the addition of FilmStruck to its international portfolio of brands is also part of Turner’s wider strategy to do more in the OTT space and expand its options to create fan-centric experiences that engage new audiences.”

The Turner news comes as a growing number of media companies are entering the international market with SVOD offerings of their own. Last month, BBC Worldwide and ITV announced it is launching its BritBox service in Canada in early 2018, while CBS revealed last August that its CBS All Access platform is heading north of the border in the early part of the year. As well, Disney plans to launch an SVOD product of its own in 2019.

FilmStruck joins Turner’s two other SVOD brands, EI Plus, which is available in Brazil, and Toonix, which operates in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark.
