Robeth, a short film by Quebec-based filmmaker Kevin T. Landry about a female robot existing on the margins of life, has bagged the Best Short Film award at the 10th Air Canada enRoute Film Festival. The news was announced last week at the Fifth Social Club in Toronto.
Each of the festival award nominees were honoured for their work in six other categories. Filmmakers Emmanuelle Lacombe, Philippe Lefebvre and Charlotte Lacoursière took home the Achievement in Direction award for French Kiss at the Sugar Shack; Trevor Mack and Matthew Taylor Blais won the Achievement in Cinematography award for Clouds of Autumn; the Achievement in Documentary award went to Derrick O’Toole, PC Barfoot and Leila Almawy for The Constant Refugee; Feathers by Hands on Deck won the Achievement in Animation award; and the Air Canada People’s Choice Award recognized Fiona Cleary and Justin MacDonald’s Breath of Life.
Public screenings for the films took place in Montreal on Nov. 14 and in Toronto on Nov. 17. Viceland presented a special screening for film students this week.
An eight-member panel of actors, directors and animators included directors, Patricia Rozema, Caitlin Durlak, Jennifer Baichwal and Stephen Dunn; actors Sarah Gadon, Karine Vanasse and Jason Priestley; and animator Chris Landreth.
In addition to the films being screened on Air Canada’s in-flight entertainment system, the airline has given each award winner an all-inclusive trip for two to the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival. Landry also received a $5,000 cash prize from Cineplex Entertainment.
