eOne sets premiere for Jay Baruchel’s directorial debut
Entertainment One has set the Canadian release date for Jay Baruchel’s directorial debut, Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Produced by No Trace Camping and Caramel Films, the sequel to the 2011 original sees Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber reprising their roles as Doug “The Thug” Glatt and Ross “The Boss” Rhea, respectively. It was announced in May 2015 that Baruchel was to direct the sequel, with the project going to camera in Toronto later that summer. The Canadian actor co-wrote the screenplay for Last of the Enforcers with Jesse Chabot. Producers on the project are David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Jeff Arkuss of No Trace Camping and André Rouleau of Caramel Films. eOne is distributing the film in Canada and release the film theatrically on March, 17, 2017.
Guru Studios in development with CBC on children’s series
Guru Studios has announced that it is in development with Kid’s CBC on underwater comedy Big Blue. Created by Guru’s Gyimah Gariba, the series follows siblings Lettie and Lemo as they explore the ocean with the rest of their submarine crew. Big Blue will target a four-to-eight-year-old demographic. Guru is also currently in production on the Netflix original series True and the Rainbow Kingdom, which will launch on the streaming service in 2017.
FuseFX appoints Rosa, Lanning to lead Vancouver operation
FuseFX has appointed visual effects veterans Randall Rosa and Wendy Lanning to lead its Vancouver studio, which opened in 2014. Rosa will serve as head of production/senior VFX supervisor, while Lanning takes the role of executive producer, as well as overseeing client relations, business development and strategic planning. Aftermath, Dark Matter and The Magicians and among the series on which FuseFX handles special effects.
Waterson claims NYTVF prize
Toronto director D.W. Waterson has won the best director prize at the New York Television Festival (NYTVF) 2016 Independent Pilot Competition for her web series That’s My DJ. The project is about artists that are trying to find their place in the rave scene and stars Orphan Black‘s Kristian Brunn, Emily Piggford (Hemlock Grove) and Jade Hassouné (Heartland).
Prentiss Fraser named EVP of content distribution at Fox
Prentiss Fraser, the former SVP, Entertainment One Television International has been promoted to the position of EVP and managing director of content distribution for Fox Networks Group. Fraser spent 14 years with eOne before departing the company to take a position at Fox in August 2014.
TVO board reappoints Peter O’Brian as chair
Educational TV net TVO has reappointed Peter O’Brian as chair of the board of directors for an additional two-year term. O’Brian has served as TVO’s chair for the past decade, after he was appointed to the position in October 2005.
Production wraps on Crown and Anchor
Indie feature Crown and Anchor has wrapped production in St. John’s, NL. Written and directed by Andrew Rowe, the film is a family crime drama that explores the impact of childhood trauma through the eyes of two estranged cousins. Crown and Anchor is financed through private equity in Newfoundland and stars Michael Rowe (Arrow), Matt Wells (Poison in the Water), Stephen McHattie, Natalie Brown and Sofia Wells. The feature is both produced and executive produced by Matt Wells and Michael Rowe, whlie Vince Buda serves and supervising producer and Rhett Giles exec produces.
