The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is diving into immersive media.

The association has announced five new award categories in the digital and immersive media fields, which will be presented at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards.

Best Immersive Experience will be presented to an original, interactive project that uses VR, AR or locative technologies and which is accessible on mobile devices or headsets.

The Social Innovator Award will be voted by the public and presented to an individual or media group that is experimenting with social media as a form of digital storytelling.

The other newly announced awards are Best Direction in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media, Best Performance by an Actress in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media and Best Performance by an Actor in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media.

These new awards will be presented at a new event: The Canadian Screen Awards Gala Honouring Excellence in Digital Immersive Storytelling, which will be held during Canadian Screen Week.

The Academy has also announced the call for entries for the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards in the Television and Digital Media categories. Submissions will be accepted until Aug. 19.
