Natalie Brown (The Strain), Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley) and Ricky Mabe (Gigi Does It) have each picked up prizes at the 2016 Golden Maple Awards, held Friday July 1 at the Mohawk Bend in Silverlake, Los Angeles.
The Golden Maple Awards, now in its second year, recognize the on-screen work done by Canadian talent in the U.S. market. It is run by the Academy of Canadians in Sports & Entertainment – Los Angeles (ACISE-LA).
Brown won the Best Actress in a TV Series Broadcast in the U.S. prize for her role as Kelly Goodweather, beating out competition from other nominees including Laura Vandervoort (Bitten), Erin Karpluk (The Riftworld Chronicles) and Emily Hampshire, who was nominated twice in the category for her roles in Schitt’s Creek and 12 Monkeys. The Strain airs on FX in the U.S.
Mabe picked up the best actor prize for his work in comedy series Gigi Does It, which airs on IFC in the U.S. Others nominated in the category were Giacomo Gianniotti Grey’s Anatomy, Brandon Jay McLaren (Graceland), Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels) and Ben Hollingsworth (Code Black).
In the remaining acting category, Amanda Crew picked up the Newcomer of the Year prize for her role in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Gregory Smith (Rookie Blue), Ennis Esmer (Red Oaks), Giacomo Gianniotti (Grey’s Anatomy) and Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels) were also nominated for the prize.
The event, hosted by actress Natasha Henstridge, also saw Missy Peregrym presented with the 2016 Maple of Excellence for Outstanding Acting Achievement Award, and Nick Bateman with the 2016 Maple of Excellence for Outstanding Social Media Achievement Award. Pop TV president Brad Schwartz was also presented with the 2016 Maple of Excellence for Outstanding TV Executive Award.
Brandon Jay McLaren (Graceland), Amanda Crew, Emily Hampshire and Meaghan Rath were among last year’s winners.
