the hero's walkToronto-based First Take Entertainment has acquired the film rights to Anita Rau Badami’s 2000 novel The Hero’s Walk.

The novel tells of the transformation of a man, Sripathi Rao, who adopts his grandchild after his estranged daughter is killed in a car crash.

The project is currently in development with First Take and the film is scheduled to go to camera in summer 2017.

The option stems from First Take’s creative producer Vinay Virmani’s participation in Canada Reads, a popular CBC radio contest on which Virmani is a panelist. First Take had recent success with 2014’s Dr. Cabbie, which First Take produced with Montreal’s Caramel Films.

Badami is an Indian-born author who lives in Canada. Her novel won the 2001 Commonwealth Prize for Best Book in Canada, as well as IMPAC Dublin Literary Prize. The novel has been translated into multiple languages worldwide and been published in Poland, Greece, Italy, Spain, Catalan, Portugal, The Netherlands, France, in addition to the U.K., U.S, Australia and New Zealand.

In Canada, Hero’s Walk is published by Random House.
