California-based distributor Monterey Media has acquired all U.S. rights to Andrew Currie’s comedy feature The Steps.
The deal saw Monterey acquire the rights from eOne’s Seville International, with Monterey founder Scott Mansfield and eOne’s VP of international sales Anick Poirier negotiating the deal. Monterey plans to release the film in the U.S. in June.
The Steps made its world bow at TIFF ’15 in Contemporary World Cinema program and is being distributed in Canada by eOne. The film was shot in Parry Sound, ON in November 2014 stars Jason Ritter (Parenthood), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), James Brolin (Life in Pieces) and Christine Lahti (Amerika).
The film tells the story of a brother and sister who visit their father’s lakehouse to meet his new wife and children. When the father announces that he plans to adopt another child in order to bring the family closer together, long-dormant resentments become apparent.
Monterey has in the past acquired a number of films that have screened at TIFF. The distributor previously picked up Anita Doron’s The Lesser Blessed, which made its world premiere at TIFF ’12, as well as Guy Maddin’s Keyhole and to Ed Gass-Donnelly’s Small Town Murder Songs.
