Renee Robinson named Jamaica’s film commissioner

The former industry programmer at TIFF has been hired by JAMPRO, Jamaica's national investment and export agency.

reneerobinson3A familiar face to TIFF industry goers, Canadian Renee Robinson has been named the film commissioner of Jamaica.

Robinson was with TIFF’s industry arm for the past two years, helming the sidebar’s programming as well as hosting and moderating panels. Her move to Jamaica follows a previous four-year stint in the Caribbean country as director of programming at Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture. She’s also worked with Toronto’s Reel World film fest as a programmer and as a part of WIFT-T.

With JAMPRO, Jamaica’s national investment and export agency, Robinson will work to build out the country’s film sector, both domestically through a focus on entrepreneurs and internationally through exporting Jamaican creative.

In a statement, Robinson said she planned to build on the Jamaican Film Festival to build international buzz for the country: “My first task at hand will be to build on the successful foundation of last year’s Film Festival. This is more than just another event. It is meant to provide opportunities and exposure for our local talent, promote Jamaica as a versatile destination for location shooting, and show the world that the international film industry can come to Jamaica to do business.”

Robinson starts Feb. 1 in her new role.
