HBO
U.S./Canada coproduction Mavis! has been picked up by HBO, with the documentary set to bow on the channel on Feb. 29. Mavis!, directed by Jessica Edwards, is about the life of music legend Mavis Staples and features interviews with Bob Dylan, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy and Chuck D. After its world premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival , the film went on to screen at Hot Docs festival in April 2015. Toronto-based distributor Films We Like acquired all the Canadian rights for the film in April.
Lionsgate
Lionsgate has partnered with Toronto-based producer Splash Entertainment and Hong Kong-based mobile app creator Animoca Brands to create two mobile games for Lionsgate’s feature animation Norm of the North, which gets its U.S. theatrical release on Jan. 15. The first game, Norm of the North’s Digit Dodge, is an educational multiplayer app (available now on iPhone and Android) that tests users’ math skills through a series of snowball fight challenges, while the second is an obstacle-dodging race game.
Corus Entertainment
Corus Entertainment has sold the broadcast rights to Our House Media’s Buying the View and Rhino Content’s Masters of Flip to two new international broadcasters. Read more about the deal here.
CBC
CBC’s Documentary Channel has acquired Adam Benzine’s Canada/U.S./U.K. coproduction Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah. The 40-minute doc has also been picked up by Channel 1 in Israel, VPRO in Holland and as well as in three other territories. Read more about the deal here.
