Being Canadian lands WGA Award nod

The Canada/U.S. copro from Robert Cohen had its world bow at the 2015 edition of Hot Docs.

The Canada/U.S. copro Being Canadian has earned a Writers Guild of America Award nomination in the category of Best Documentary Screenplay.

The doc, written and directed by Canadian comedian Robert Cohen, is up against three other titles for the prize: Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Prophet’s Prey.

Being Canadian is produced by Toronto-based Amaze Film + Television and L.A.-based GRAiNEY Pictures. The doc, which had its world premiere at the 2015 edition of the Hot Docs International Film Festival, follows Cohen as he travels across Canada to interview Canadian and non-Canadian celebrities alike to find out what it means to truly be Canadian. Being Canadian was also included in Telefilm Canada’s inaugural Canada Cool film tour this year.

Being Canadian is distributed by Candy Factory Films in the U.S. and Entertainment One in Canada.

The winners of the Writers Guild of America Awards will be announced at a ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Feb. 13.
