shawn williamsonVancouver’s Brightlight Pictures has signed on to produce feature drama Penance, from director Brad Turner (24, Homeland).

Penance is based on a Norwegian film called Eventryland (“It’s Only Make Believe”), which is written and directed by Arlid Ostin Ommundsen. The screenplay was adapted and written by Vancouver’s Zoe Robyn, who also directs Smokebomb’s MsLabelled.

Brightlight president Shawn Williamson will produce the feature with Jessica Petelle and David Oskar Olafsson and Arni Filippusson of Icelandic prodco Mystery Productions. Williamson first met director Turner in Vancouver while the two were involved in the production for Fox’s Second Chance.

The feature is being structured as a Canada/Iceland coproduction, though the filmmakers are currently exploring the option of adding Norway and making it a three-way copro. Production is scheduled to commence in 2016.

Penance tells the story of a young mother who tries to rebuild her relationship with her daughter after serving time in prison.

Executive producers on the project are Ommundsen and Gary Cranner of Chezville.

Last month Brighlight Pictures penned a five-picture sales deal with L.A.’s Voltage Pictures.
