ABMO Films acquires February for Canada

Co-founders Alex Bronfman and Matt Orenstein discuss the strategy behind their newly launched distribution company, and their first acquisition February (pictured).

Newly launched distribution company ABMO Films, co-founded by Alex Bronfman and Matt Orenstein, has acquired the Canadian rights to the USA/Canada copro February.

The feature, directed by Osgood Perkins and produced by Paris Film, Unbroken Pictures, Zed Filmworks and Go Insane Pictures, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Vanguard program. Orenstein said he saw an early draft of the February script before it went to camera, and after viewing  the feature of TIFF, he and Bronfman decided it was the project they wanted to use to launch ABMO.

The company is aiming to acquire cast-driven, mid-sized independent films that are being passed over by other Canadian distributors, said Bronfman in a joint interview with Orenstein.

“We feel there is an appetite for that content in Canada and the audiences are under served in terms of those films that are being seen and picked up on the States, but not necessarily in Canada,” Orenstein said.

While he declined to provide details on what other titles might fit into the company’s strategy – as they are actively looking to acquire some of those projects – he did point to films that screen at Sundance or Tribeca as those that would fit well into the ABMO’s slate. In the short-term, Orenstein said the majority of the distributor’s slate would likely be made up of American films screening at American festivals. The company is looking to acquire films across genres.

A24 and DirecTV hold the U.S. distribution rights to February, where it is slated for a 2016 release. ABMO acquired the Canadian rights for the film across all platforms. The ABMO Films deal was brokered by the UTA Independent Film Group and CAA, with Highland Film Group handling international sales.
