The total operating revenue for the film and video distribution industry in Canada hit $1.8 billion in 2013, according to the most recent survey results released by Statistics Canada on Monday.
The biannual survey reported the Canadian film and video distribution industry’s total operating expenses in 2013 were $1.5 billion, leading to an operating profit margin of 18.6%. Ontario accounted for 87.9% of the operating revenue for the industry in 2013, with Quebec accounting for 10.2%.
Royalties, franchise fees and memberships accounted for 32.1% of total operating expenses, while advertising, marketing and promotions accounted for 20.7% of expenses. Costs of goods sold made up 27.1% of expenses.
In 2013, the distribution of film and video titles made up 71.1% of total sales in the industry. Wholesaling revenue, meanwhile, accounted for 28.5% of total sales.
The operating revenue for the industry reported in the 2011 edition of the survey was $1.85 billion. However, Statistics Canada cautioned against comparing the 2013 results to previous years due to changes in methodology.
