It looks like the Hotel Transylvania family is gearing up for life on the small screen, as Corus Entertainment-owned Nelvana and Sony Pictures Animation partner to develop a new animated TV series based on the 2012 blockbuster film.
The series will focus on the teenage years of Dracula’s daughter, Mavis, and her friends as they charter new adventures. It will be developed and produced by Nelvana Studio in Toronto and is slated to launch in early 2017.
Distribution will be handled by Sony Pictures Television in the U.S., while Nelvana Enterprises will distribute the series in all other territories. Sony Pictures Animation holds global licenses for toys, games and publishing. For all other CP categories, Sony reserves U.S. rights and Corus will hold international rights. The Hotel Transylvania series will be executive produced by Sony Pictures Animation’s Rick Mischel and Nelvana’s Colin Bohm and Irene Weibel.
The first Hotel Transylvania feature was released in September 2012 and introduced Dracula’s titular five-stake resort, which will make its appearance once again this fall in Hotel Transylvania 2 (pictured), to be released on Sept. 25 in North America.
Sony is no stranger to show adaptations based on its popular feature films. Last October, for example, the company announced a deal with DHX Media to produce a kids TV series based on the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise.
