Canada still reeling in TV pilots: report

Toronto posts a significant gain in 2014-2015 while the number of pilots shot in Vancouver has doubled over the past four years, notes a new report from FilmL.A.

While Los Angeles is still the shooting destination of the majority of pilots, Vancouver and Toronto continue to see production gains in the space.

A new study from non-profit organization FilmL.A. surveyed pilots shot in North America during the 2014-15 development cycle. In total, 202 TV pilots were shot (91 comedies and 111 dramas) across network, cable and digital, with 91 being filmed in L.A., 16 shot in Vancouver and nine in Toronto.

Los Angeles’ total share of pilots produced has fallen from 81% to 45% over the past decade, and in recent years Vancouver has emerged behind New York as the most-used location for filming pilot productions outside of L.A. This year, Vancouver provided the setting for 16 pilots, compared with New York’s 25. The number of pilots shot in Vancouver has doubled over the past four years – just eight were shot in 2010-11. One less pilot was shot in Vancouver this year compared to last year.

Toronto, though further behind, is still seeing a gradual increase in pilot production. The number of pilots shot in the city has risen from six to nine over the past three years.
