Did they ‘Dare to Agree’?

Executives from across the Canadian TV industry gathered this week for what is understood to have been a pan-industry meeting about improving future collaboration.

The Canadian TV industry is not exactly CSIS, but it seems a large and well-attended gathering of industry execs took place this week under the radar in Toronto.

Under the banner “Dare to Agree,” the meeting was held at the CBC’s headquarters on Wednesday and included representatives from across the industry, including broadcasters, producers and government. The goal, as understood, was to discuss how different sides of the industry could better work together as the future unfolds in the new media/post-Let’s Talk TV landscape.

Confirmed by Playback as in attendance were Jamie Brown, CMPA chair and CEO at Frantic Films; Christine Shipton, SVP content, Shaw Media; Robin Mirsky, executive director, Rogers Group of Funds and an unnamed Bell Media representative. Blue Ant Media was invited but unable to attend and, despite being the host, CBC had not confirmed whether or not it participated as of press time. eOne, believed to have a played key role, declined to comment. A spokesperson for the CRTC said the regulator was not in attendance.

It is understood that the meeting was not intended to address thorny issues such as ownership of content, but rather how the industry functions at a macro level.
