Blue Ice Pictures moves ahead on Madiba miniseries

The Nelson Mandela biopic will shoot in South Africa later this year, with L.A.-based director Kevin Hooks on board.

Toronto-based indie producer Blue Ice Pictures has found a director for its Nelson Mandela miniseries.

Veteran Los Angeles executive producer and director Kevin Hooks is to helm Madiba, a six-parter about the life of the late anti-Apartheid campaigner and South Africa’s first president. The company also used the occasion to officially announce the hire of former HBO exec Mark Levenstein, who joined the company in early 2014, and heads Blue Ice’s L.A. office as CEO.

Hooks is currently executive producing and directing Fox’s Backstrom, and earlier ran four seasons of Prison Break, also from Fox.

Blue Ice will produce Madiba, to shoot in South Africa later this year, with Out of Africa Entertainment and Left Bank Pictures ahead of a U.S. bow on BET Networks.

This February, BET aired another miniseries from Blue Ice Group, The Book of Negroes, which was coproduced by the umbrella company’s Out of Africa Entertainment, along with Conquering Lion Pictures, and aired on CBC this January.

In addition to its Toronto offices, Blue Ice Pictures has offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, L.A. and London.
