Michael Mabbot’s Canadian doc Music Lessons will get its world premiere as part of the the Special Presentations program at the 2015 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.
The Toronto-based festival on Tuesday revealed an additional 10 docs screening in Special Presentations, which join 17 previously announced titles. The program features both world and international premieres, as well as award-winners from recent international festivals and works by veteran documentarians.
Music Lessons is a behind-the-scenes look at the children and music teachers of non-profit organization Sistema Toronto, which provides free music lessons to children. Canadian coproductions set to screen in the Special Presentations program include Jessica Edwards’ Mavis! (Canada/USA) and Jacqui Morris and David Morris’ Attacking the Devil: Harold Evans and the Last Nazi War Crime (U.K./Canada), which will both have their international premieres at Hot Docs. Nick Berardini’s Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle, a USA/Canada copro, will also have its international premiere at Hot Docs.
Other international premieres include Neal Broffman’s online vigilantism doc Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi and Ivy Meeropol’s Indian Point, on a nuclear plant 35 miles out of New York City.
Meanwhile, receiving its North American premiere is Henrik Stockare, Thomas Jackson and Charlotte Landelius’ Foodies, on globe-trotting food bloggers; while Canadian premieres include Garbus’ What Happened, Miss Simone? on the iconic American singer Nina Simone, Guy Reid’s ecology doc Planetary, and Honigmann’s doc on the Netherlands’ Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Around the World in 50 Concerts.
Hot Docs runs from April 23 to May 3. The complete Special Presentations program and the full selection of festival titles are to be announced on March 17, including the opening night film.
