Amanda Tapping has been named ACTRA’s 2015 Woman of the Year, the national professional performers union announced Wednesday.
The honour recognizes an ACTRA member who has excelled in both her artistic and advocacy endeavours, with the honouree selected by the ACTRA National Women’s Committee. That body’s mandate includes looking at the concerns of and supporting women in ACTRA and throughout the industry.
Tapping is best known for her roles on the sci-fi series Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate: Universe. She was also the star and executive producer of Sanctuary, which began as a web series before it had a four-season run on U.S. cable net Syfy. She has also appeared in Supernatural and Package Deal, and in the films Taken Back, Random Acts of Romance,Hell in a Handbag and Space Milkshake. Her directing credits include Primeval: New World, Arctic Air, Continuum, Strange Empire, Olympus and Dark Matter.
On the advocacy side, Tapping co-founded Sanctuary for Kids, a charitable organization that aims to help children in crisis, and supports a number of charities such as the Coast Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, UNICEF and V-Day. She also works as a mentor with member-based organization Women in Films and Television.
