Producer tackles youth employment with new series

My Job Rocks, the first series from executive producer Paul Evans, has landed on Toronto-based independent station WIN HD Canada as it aims to growth its youth audience.

The half-hour My Job Rocks features interviews between teenaged hosts Kafaye Clark and Skye Rogers and various professionals who share their on-the-job experience, including daily duties, salary, education and required training. The first season of the series includes six episodes.

WIN HD, which focuses on lifestyle, news, sports, business and entertainment programming for a Caribbean diaspora audience, was looking for educational content geared to younger audiences, says Pip Bola, president of WIN HD.

Bola says he liked the youth-employment spin of the series, which he views as being relatively rare: “It was a great opportunity for us to deliver this niche content to this age group,” he told Playback Daily. He said the channel is also aiming to feature more Canadian-produced with wide appeal that can serve both Caribbean and non-Caribbean audiences.

The inspiration for the series came from a conversation Evans had with his son about potential career paths. When he found his son didn’t have many career resources to research, he decided to launch his own series pointing teens to career options they might otherwise not know exist.

In short, he wanted to create helpful, meaningful content that can “help young people get a sense of themselves,” Evans said.

The series is set to bow in April on WIN HD, available on Bell Fibe and Rogers Cable. Evans hopes to sell the show to other educational broadcasters once its run is finished on WIN.

Evans has also shot 12 five-to-six minute webisodes to accompany the series, currently located on its website. Evans and his team also plan to launch an app linked to the series, that will feature new webisodes separate from the content appearing on the website.

To promote the series, the producers are currently working on a social media campaign that will include a YouTube channel created to support My Job Rocks, and promotion on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The producers are also working on a media plan to run teasers for the series on websites targeted to teens, Evans said.

My Job Rocks is produced by My Job Rocks Inc. and The Brave Alliance, a Toronto-based multi-media advertising and production company owned by Evans. Cara Volchoff serves as producer on the series, with Pamela Ward directing along with Evans. The series received financial support from the Canada Media Fund, the OMDC and tax credits.
