Two Mountain Road series greenlit by HGTV, Cottage Life

Ottawa-based Mountain Road Productions has landed two greenlights for series in the home renovation space from two separate broadcasters.

I Wrecked My House (14 x 30-minute) was picked up by HGTV Canada following a one-hour special by the same name that aired on the channel in April. The series, hosted by comedian Steve Patterson, seeks out the most off-the-wall home repairs and jerry-built fixes completed by homeowners across Canada. Production on the series kicked off on Nov. 7, and is currently slated to bow on HGTV Canada in spring 2015.

A second home reno show, Master My Disaster (working title), is set to start production in late November on 13 half-hour episodes that will air on Blue Ant Media’s Cottage Life channel starting spring 2015. The series, hosted by Dave Depencier, takes a look at cottage renovation projects gone wrong.

With these two series, the prodco was aiming to take a different spin on the home reno genre, said Tim Alp, owner and executive producer with Mountain Road Productions.

I Wrecked My House is really a comedy more than a reno show. It’s all about the insane things people do to their homes in the name of ‘home repair,'” Alp told Playback Daily. “We are talking about diapers to fix leaky pipes and duct tape to hold kitchen cabinets in place.” For Master My Disaster, the prodco decided to zone in on cottage renovations, which also tend to be more off-the-wall than your typical home renos, Alp said.

On the digital side, Mountain Road is wrapping up production on Real or Fake?, a web series for National Geographic Kids magazine. The 10 webisodes follow four teenage hosts who pose a series of “real or fake” questions to the public. The web series is a spin-off from one of the themes of the magazine and National Geographic Kids is planning to potentially launch a franchise of books based off the theme, Alp said.

“For us it’s very exciting to be leading the way coming out with the web series ahead of the books,” Alp said, adding that this is the second straight-to-web series the prodco has completed.
