Distributor Kino Lorber has acquired the U.S. rights to The Wanted 18 (pictured) from the National Film Board of Canada.
The documentary, which world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last month, was directed by Amer Shomali and Paul Cowan, and coproduced by Montreal-based Intuitive Pictures and the NFB.
Using a mix of stop-motion animation, live action and interviews, the doc recounts a story from the First Palestinian Intifada when a group of farmers in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour purchased 18 Israeli cows in order to take ownership of their dairy production. The Israeli army eventually declared the group a national security threat, forcing the operation to go underground.
Kino Lorber is planning a nation-wide theatrical release for next winter and spring alongside an educational and community screening campaign. DVD and digital releases will follow next fall.
Last week, two other docs from TIFF’s 2014 line-up – Monsoon and National Diploma – were among five feature docs acquired by distributor Cinephil.
