Soshefeigh heads to Ireland with The Algorithm format

When veteran production execs Rene Brar and Matt O’Brien were searching for a broadcaster to take on their original game show format The Algorithm, they knew they had to look overseas.

Having launched their Vancouver and San Francisco-based prodco, Soshefeigh, in 2012, the duo had developed an innovative format they believed had legs, but would require an international partner to get off the ground. With funding mechanisms in Canada limited for game shows and finding domestic broadcaster appetites limited for unproven original formats, the partners headed overseas to shop the series.

“It was important for us to find a territory and a broadcaster keen to take a risk on new formats,” explained Brar.

In Ireland, Soshefeigh found a willing partner in Ireland’s TV3, who commissioned 10 one-hour episodes of The Algorithm, now set to bow on TV3 in spring 2015. All3Media, which is handling the distribution rights to the series, will be shopping The Algorithm this fall at MIPCOM.

The co-viewing game show is a “who knows best” type of format, in which one member of a team (such as a family or group of friends) is isolated and personality-profiled using a sophisticated profiling test. The show then sees the rest of the team compete against “The Alogorithm,” a computer system that uses the test to predict the answers to questions posed to the contestant, to see who best knows the contestant.

The series was shot at the TV3 Sony HD Studio in Dublin.

The Algorithm is coproduced by Soshefeigh and TV3’s 3 Studios with Brar and O’Brien serving as executive producers. The Algorithm was financed through broadcaster licence fees and investment from All3 Media.

Soshefeigh, which was launched in 2012, has offices in both Vancouver and San Francisco. Prior to launching Soshefeigh, Brar was previously a story editor at Scott Free Films and director of development at Stone & Company Entertainment, while O’Brien was most recently the VP of creative affairs for Reveille and Shine America.

Soshefeigh also produces Battle Cats, a half-hour comedy where cats compete against each other to complete an obstacle course.

Battle Cats will debut on Bite Tv in Canada in October.
