Thunderbird Films is getting into the Canadian distribution business.
The Vancouver-based indie producer has acquired London-based indie distributor Soda Pictures.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Soda Pictures will operate as a separate division and bring U.K. arthouse and indie films to Canada for distribution.
The first title from the new Thunderbird division is Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, which was acquired from HanWay Films ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night.
The deal will also see Soda principals Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher ink long-term contract deals with Thunderbird as they acquire and release new content in both Canada and the U.K./Ireland markets.
Soda Pictures is expected to unveil added distribution titles for the Canadian market in the coming days.
The latest buy for Thunderbird Films follows the earlier acquisition of Reunion Pictures and the formation of Sea to Sky Studios as a joint venture with Lionsgate.
