Downloadable games from Pixel YUL and Spearhead Games were among the projects to receive the most cash in the latest round of financing from the Canada Media Fund‘s experimental stream.
The development of Open Orion, from Spearhead Games, and ReLOAD from Pixel YUL were both supported by $400,000 investments from the fund. In total, the financer invested $4.3 million across 18 projects, including six applications, one interactive platform and 11 games. Other projects that received substantial funding from the CMF include the digital media platform Interact 220 from Turbine ($374,895), the Drag’n Fly app from Les Productions Version 10 ($362,039) and The Mage’s Path ($373,915) from Jeux Borealys.
The experimental stream development funding goes towards the conceptualization of a project, creative and technical aspects or the drafting of a product proposal.
On the marketing side, bitHead’s brainCloud app garnered the most financing with a $343,947 investment. brainCloud, which can be used on any device and integrated with any social media network, helps to facilitate the management, development and monetization of games. The CMF also invested $350,287 in Wundr Software to support the company’s marketing initiatives for its Playwrite software that aims to make it easier to create eBooks.
In total, the CMF contributed $2.4 million to support the marketing efforts for six games, five software applications, and one social media application. The marketing funding is intended to support the development of national and international marketing campaigns, internet promotion and other marketing activities.
On a regional basis, 12 of the projects that received development support where from Quebec, with three projects hailing from Ontario, two from British Columbia and one from Nova Scotia. Six projects from Quebec received marketing support, followed by three projects from British Columbia, two from Ontario and one from Manitoba.
