Bubble watch: which Canadian TV shows risk the axe

After the Canadian Upfront presentations and news Shaw Media has cancelled Top Chef Canada, the spotlight turns to where the axe will next fall.

Bubble shows facing renewal or cancellation include Working the Engels, the sitcom from Shaw Media and Halfire Entertainment about a family in crisis and starring Andrea Martin.

Shaw Media reports no decision has been made on a possible second season for the comedy, even while new scripts are developed.

Much will depend on how Working the Engels, a coproduction with Global and NBC, performs on the U.S. net in a summer run that starts July 10.

Elsewhere, City scheduled Package Deal on Friday nights at 8 p.m. for its fall 2014 campaign, but left Force Four Entertainment’s Seed unscheduled and in limbo.

A Rogers Media spokesperson said no decisions have yet been made on a third season for Seed, after it aired on Thursday nights during its sophomore run.

On the U.S. front, Bell Media has yet to renew American Idol, a one-time ratings juggernaut for the network, for its 2014-15 season.

A Bell Media spokesperson said American Idol may yet make it to the mid-season schedule, but as yet there’s no official announcement on its future.

Meanwhile, Top Chef Canada host Lisa Ray – and later Shaw Media – confirmed on her Twitter account that the reality TV series had been chopped by Shaw Media.

“We’re packing up our knives after 4 super seasons, thanks to all who tuned into @TopChefCanada, it’s been a fun ride for this culinary voyeur,” Ray said in a tweet.
