Deals: eOne, Mongrel, 108 Media, D Films

Entertainment One

Entertainment One has secured the international rights to the upcoming Bryan Cranston-starring film Trumbo. The film tells the story of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, portrayed by Cranston. Helen Mirren will also co-star in the film. eOne Films International will handle sales of the film outside of the U.K., Canada and Australia/New Zealand. eOne pre-bought the rights to distribute the film in the U.K., Canada and Australia/New Zealand ahead of Cannes. Trumbo is written by John McNamara, with Jay Roach set to direct. Janice Williams, Michael London, Nimitt Mankad, Shivani Rawat, Monica Levinson, Kevin Brown and McNarama are all producers on the project, with Kelly Mullen serving as executive producer. Trumbo is set to start filming in the U.S. on Sept. 15.

Mongrel Media

Mongrel Media has acquired the Canadian rights to Boyhood, a film from writer/director/producer Richard Linklater that was shot over a 12-year period. The film stars the director’s daughter Lorelei Linklater, along with Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. Mongrel Media is planning a platform release for the film, with a release date of July 18 in Canada. Cathleen Sutherland served as a producer on Boyhood, with Jonathan Sehring and John Sloss executive producing.

108 Media

Toronto-based 108 Media has picked up the international sales rights to The Insect King, from writer/director Priscilla Cameron. The film stars Melissa George, Taika Waititi and Sophie Lowe. It is currently in pre-production, with Brigit Callow-Wright serving as producer. 108 Media will start sales of the film at the Cannes Marche du Film in May.

D Films

Toronto-based D Films has picked up the Canadian distribution rights to the indie drama Cake. The film is based on a Black List script by Patrick Tobin, and starts Jennifer Aniston along with Anna Kendrick and Sam Worthington. Production on Cake wrapped up in Los Angeles earlier this week. Aniston serves as executive producer on Cake, with Ben Barnz and Kristin Hahn producing.
