Rogers Media puts its mark on Bachelor format

With the popularity of international factual formats high with both Canadian broadcasters and viewers, standing out in the commotion poses a challenge.

With it second edition of The Bachelor Canada, Rogers Media is looking to bring viewers into its world of romance with a new initiative to let viewers choose one of the women vying for TV love.

“The Bachelor franchise has such a huge online following…and to allow Canadians to chose their own bachelorette I think speaks to that audience that craves that type of engagement,” Nataline Rodrigues, director of original programming with Rogers Media, told Playback Daily.

At BachelorCanada.ca, viewers can vote on who they would like to see on the show in season two, effectively crowdsourcing the casting process, she notes.

The U.S. edition of The Bachelor has never taken on an initiative like this, Rodrigues adds.

“This is the difference between just buying another show, and putting your mark on a show,” she said.

Voting began on Feb. 17, and will run until Feb. 28. The winning woman from the online competition will join 24 additional bachelorettes on season two of The Bachelor Canada, which is set to air on City this fall.
